J. London Object of the Month
In many of my client’s homes in Stonington Borough, I see a familiar wire mascot animal created by artist Bruce Campbell. Recently the Cate Charles Gallery, at 147 Water Street gathered a selection of his magical animals. Most impressive is his Horseshoe Crab, an ambitious, actual-sized, mechanical sculpture mounted on a wooden block.

You view the transparent inner workings of the crab with 8 legs, 2 mandibles and 2 claws all that move by way a wire handle which turns them in lockstep rhythm. When engaged with this kinetic object you feel as if you have control of nature’s mystery.
Mr. Campbell is a talented graphic designer who designs books and exhibition catalogs for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While on the train to New York from Stonington, he is able to craft his wire menagerie with just a few tools. His work never fails to bring a bring a smile and lift my spirits with their glee.
When doing a fine art appraisal, one of the questions I ask is whether the object can have meaning and connection beyond the period in which it was created. The recent recession has sharply demonstrated this viewpoint, where the works of Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst reflecting the excess of the past decade, now seem repellent to the general public. This is an important consideration when buying art. Mr. Campbell’s widely popular sculptures have a special quality that endures.
