The Art Walk is an annual event held in mid-September hosted by the Stonington Borough Merchants Association. The one-day event features the best of Southeastern Connecticut’s and Southern Rhode Island’s art scene, the Borough’s shops, cultural assets, restaurants, and area activities. The event is free to the public and attracts visitors from across New England and beyond.

The event has quickly become known as a mecca for great local art and art-loving patrons. A well-curated assortment of over 60 artists across 10 genres, including painters, illustrators, textile artists, sculptors, potters, makers, and photographers, line Water Street and fill charming courtyards with tents and tables.

Our entire community plays an important part in the annual Art Walk. Merchants, businesses, and non-profits are all encouraged to participate and they do — hosting hunts, exhibits, tours, tastings, pop-ups, and even theatrical performances!

THE Seventh ANNUAL ART WALK ACTIVITIES

  • Park Place Artists, a group of 8-10 art students, will be exhibiting at the residence of Sally Vail at 165 Water Street.

  • Marya Ursin of Mystic Paper Beasts, a theater troupe known for their extraordinary collection of expressive mythological masks and ingenious props, will rove throughout the event, offering wishes to visitors.

  • The Glaze Vase Project returns to the Seventh Annual Art Walk thanks to local potter and Art Walk participant, Lyndsay Meiklem Dean of Glaze Handmade. Lyndsay will hide 20 tiny vases throughout the borough for seekers to find.

  • September 12 through October 29, La Grua Center (32 Water Street) in partnership with Expressiones Cultural Center will present Echoes in Motion, an exhibition by Verónica Ximénez, María Vargas, & Carlos Garrett. This show, featuring three interdisciplinary artists from Guadalajara, Mexico, invites reflection on the rhythms of nature, the fluidity of memory, and the dynamic interplay between tradition and technology. La Grua will be open to the public during the Art Walk from 10 am – 2 pm for a suggested donation of $5.

  • Stonington Free Library will be open 10 am - 3 pm on the day of the Art Walk, featuring an exhibit by artist (and Art Walk participant) Adrienne Pratt of Ship Shape Shop, and the 2025 LOVE Where You Read PHOTO Contest. Photographers ages 15+ may submit up to 2 images for a chance to win cash prizes and be featured on the SFL’s NEW library cards and displayed in the SFL Stairwell Gallery. Also, don’t miss sculptor Doug Rice on Wadawanuck Square. On Sunday, September 14, at 5 pm, photographer David Hendley will be presenting his work and discussing his approach to photography and how he captures the subtle, powerful beauty of nature.

  • The James Merrill House, a national historic landmark and former residence of James Ingram Merrill (107 Water Street), will be open for tours on the day of the Art Walk, where visitors will get to explore the apartment where Merrill lived and worked. The Visitor’s Center will also be open.

  • Zest Fresh Pastry will be serving delicious crepes in a charming courtyard on Grand Street, next to Maggie Lee Designs (and Art Walk featured artist, Deidre Corcoran)!
