Life on the Water: Discover New England Science & Sailing

Tucked along the Stonington Borough waterfront, New England Science & Sailing Foundation (NESS) is more than a nonprofit — it’s a neighbor, a classroom, and a gathering place where the community connects with the ocean in meaningful ways.

For 25 years, NESS has welcomed students, families, and visitors to experience the water not just as scenery, but as a space for discovery, confidence-building, and lifelong learning.

A Waterfront Organization with a Community Spirit

NESS empowers students of all ages through ocean-based experiential education, using sailing, marine science, and adventure sports as platforms for hands-on learning. Programs range from accredited STEM school partnerships, homeschool enrichment, and after-school offerings to youth summer camps, adult and family sailing, kayaking, harbor cruises, and community events that keep the Borough waterfront active year-round.

For many visitors strolling along Water Street, NESS represents the lively energy of students learning new skills, boats heading out for lessons, and programs that bring people together through shared experiences on the water.

From Small Beginnings to Regional Impact

Founded in 2002 with just 14 students and eight Optimist boats, NESS began with a simple belief: the ocean is one of the most powerful classrooms available. Over time, that idea grew into a nationally recognized educational institution while remaining deeply rooted in Stonington’s maritime heritage.

As NESS celebrates its 25th year, milestones include significant recognition by US Sailing and program accreditation through the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, highlighting both instructional excellence and academic rigor.

Today, NESS serves students across the region while continuing to operate in the Borough, committed to strengthening community connections to the water.

Why NESS Stands Out

After 25 years, NESS remains rooted in a simple yet powerful idea: the ocean has the ability to inspire, empower, and transform.

At the heart of NESS is a commitment to learning by doing. Whether students are trimming sails, collecting water-quality data, or navigating new challenges, they develop real-world skills while building social-emotional strengths that last a lifetime and shape their futures.

NESS also prioritizes access, offering scholarships and adaptable equipment so that anyone who wants to be on the water can be on the water. This commitment ensures programs remain inclusive while fostering lifelong ocean and environmental stewards.

Impact is measured not only in participation but in transformation. Students arrive at NESS with varying levels of confidence, access, and academic engagement. Many step onto a boat or enter the water for the first time.

With community support, those first experiences become turning points — moments when curiosity sparks, confidence emerges, and students begin to see themselves as capable learners and leaders.
